Route info: Rongai route is located on the leeward side of the mountain which receives less rainfall. The path provides excellent views and has a gradual slope which makes it a moderate climb. Its literally the only route where wild animals can be spotted along the way

ITINERARY DETAILS

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1950 m) To Rongai Cave (2830 m)

Distance: 8 km / 5 miles

Trekking time: 3-4 hours

Zone: Rainforest

Pickup from your accommodation in Moshi and drive to Rongai gate for entrance formalities. Initiate the climb by passing through the tropical rain forest hosting variety of wildlife including the black and white colobus monkeys. Make a stop at Rongai cave where you will spend the night.

 

Day 2: Rongai Cave (2830 m) To Second Cave (3450 m) To Kikelewa Cave (3600 m)

Distance: 10km / 6.2 miles                                                                                                                                                                                                      Trekking time: 6-8 hours

Zone: Hearth

Another day climbing steadily through moorland zone to Second cave. Arrive by mid noon where you will break for lunch. Proceed hiking to finally arrive at Kikelewa Camp for an overnight stay.

Day 3: Kikelewa Cave (3600 m) To Mawenzi Tarn (4300 meters)

Distance: 4 km / 2 miles                                                                                                                                                                                                         Trekking time: 3-4 hours

Zone: Alpine Desert

Hike towards the Alpine zone displaying magnificent views of the landscape. The path takes you beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi where the camp is situated (Mawenzi Tarn). An overnight stay at the camp

Day 4:  Mawenzi Tarn (4300 m) Acclimatization

This day is purely meant for acclimatization which prepares your body for high altitude and low oxygen levels. Take short but steady walk on Mawenzi ridge which displays stunning view of Kibo and Mawenzi. In the afternoon, return to the camp for lunch and much rest.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn (4300 meters) To Kibo Hut (4700 m)

Distance: 9km / 5.5 miles

Trekking time: 8-10 hours

Zone: Alpine Desert

A short challenging climb which leads you towards the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Proceed hiking to reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon. Spend the rest of the day drinking lots of water and have much rest in preparation for the summit ascend. Its recommended to sleep very early before 7:00 pm.

Day 6: Summit Ascend At Uhuru Peak (5895m)

Distance: 20 km / 12.5 miles                                                                                                                                                                                                   Trekking time: 13-15 hours

Zone: High Alpine Zone, Glacial Zone

Be awake by around 23:00 hours for a hot drink + snacks and putting on the necessary trekking gears. By torchlight, leave camp and start climbing through the volcanic scree to reach Gilman’s Point (5681m) by sunrise. Spend some time resting and enjoying the view before making the final round trip to reach Uhuru peak (5895m). Take photographs at the summit while feeling accomplished standing at the highest point in Africa. Start descending down the mountain to finally reach Horombo hut in the late afternoon. Dinner and sleep at the hut.

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3720 m) To Marangu Gate (1870 m)

Distance: 10 km / 6 miles

Trekking time: 3-4 hours

Zone: Rainforest

The last day completing the final round down to Marangu gate passing through the beautiful lush green forest. Upon arrival, climbers get awarded. For those who reached Gilman’s point receive green certificates while those who reached Uhuru peak receive golden certificates. Drive back to the hotel for rest and much celebrations or to the airport for departure.
