Route info: Umbwe is the most steepest and direct route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The trail is more preferred by trained and experienced hikers due to its steepness. However the route is not mostly used due to its difficulties and much risk

ITINERARY DETAILS
Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1800m) To Umbwe camp (2940m)
Distance: 11 km / 7 miles
Trekking time: 5-7 hours
Zone: Rainforest
Pick up from the hotel in Moshi and drive to Umbwe gate for registration processes. Climb through banana and coffee plantations unto the tropical rain forest. The trail crosses over a ridge between Lonzo and Umbwe rivers which finally leads to Umbwe camp.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp (2940m) To Barranco Camp (3950m)
Distance: 6 km/4 miles
Trekking time: 4-5 hours
Zone: Heath
Another day doing a steep climb with excellent views of Kilimanjaro ahead. The path leads to Barranco valley which descends down to Barranco camp to arrive in the afternoon. Have lunch upon arrival and take your time gaining energy for the next day.
Day 3: Barranco Camp Acclimatization
On this particular day, you give yourself a chance to acclimatize. This enables your body to adjust to high altitude and low oxygen levels. Have a short walk in the environment near camp till mid afternoon. Afterwards, return to the camp for lunch and rest.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3950m) To Karanga Camp(4035m)
Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Trekking time: 4-5 hours
Zone: Alpine desert
Spend another day acclimatizing to climb the Great Barranco Wall of 900 ft cliff. Take a walk across a series of hills and valleys into the Karanga Valley taking you to Karanga Camp. This is where you will set camp for an overnight stay.
Day 5: Karanga Camp (4035m) To Barafu Camp(4600m)
Distance: 4 km / 2 miles
Trekking time: 4-5 hours
Zone: Alpine desert
Trek out of Karanga valley following the path intersecting Mweka trail. The trail passes through the rocky section to finally arrive at Barafu Camp. Have an early dinner and retire to bed by 7:00 in preparing for the final summit.
Day 6: Ascend To The Summit at Uhuru Peak (5895m)
Distance: 18 km / 11.2 miles
Trekking time: 13- 15hours
Zone: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Be awake by around 23:00 hours for a hot drink + snacks and putting on the necessary trekking gears. By torchlight, leave camp and start climbing through the volcanic scree to reach Stella Point (5685m) by sunrise. Spend some time resting and enjoying the view before making the final round trip to reach Uhuru peak (5895m). Take photographs at the summit while feeling accomplished standing at the highest point in Africa. Start descending down the mountain to finally reach Mweka hut in the evening.
Day 7: Mweka Camp (3100 m) to Mweka Gate (1640 m)
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Trekking time: 3-4 hours
Zone: Rainforest
This is the last day that hikers go for a short walk, towards Mweka gate. Upon arrival, climbers get awarded. For those who reached Stella point receive green certificates while those who reached Uhuru peak receive golden certificates. Go for a drive back to the hotel for rest and much celebrations or to the airport for departure.
