This 7-day trek is ideal for those seeking a less crowded experience while still enjoying Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
  • Elevation: 2,020m to 2,625m
  • Distance: 8km | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • After a short drive to Rongai Gate, your trek begins with a gentle climb through farmlands and pine forests. The trail is peaceful, offering views of the Kenyan plains, before arriving at Simba Camp for your first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp
  • Elevation: 2,625m to 3,450m
  • Distance: 7km | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Today’s hike is steady and continues through moorland. You will begin to see the alpine vegetation as you climb higher. Second Cave Camp offers stunning views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields.
Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp
  • Elevation: 3,450m to 3,600m
  • Distance: 9km | Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
  • The trail begins to steepen as you trek towards Kikelewa Camp. Along the way, you’ll pass through a landscape of giant heathers and volcanic rock formations. The camp is located in a sheltered valley with impressive views of the surrounding hills.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
  • Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m
  • Distance: 6km | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • A short but steep ascent takes you up to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, nestled beneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. This is a spectacular camping spot and allows for acclimatization with breathtaking scenery.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
  • Elevation: 4,330m to 4,700m
  • Distance: 9km | Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Crossing the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo, the terrain becomes barren and rugged. You’ll reach Kibo Hut, the base camp for your summit attempt, and rest early in preparation for the midnight ascent.
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, down to Horombo Hut
  • Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (summit) to 3,720m
  • Distance: 22km | Hiking Time: 10-14 hours
  • Around midnight, you’ll begin your summit push to Uhuru Peak. The ascent is challenging, with steep switchbacks and cold temperatures, but reaching the roof of Africa at 5,895m is an incredible reward. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll descend to Horombo Hut for some well-deserved rest.
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
  • Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m
  • Distance: 20km | Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • The final day is a descent through the lush rainforest to Marangu Gate. Once at the gate, you’ll receive your certificate of achievement before being transferred back to your hotel.
