The 8-Day West Safari takes you on a thrilling journey through Tanzania’s lesser-known but equally captivating western wildlife destinations. Starting in Katavi National Park, renowned for its untouched wilderness, large herds of buffalo, and numerous hippos, you’ll experience some of Tanzania’s most remote and pristine landscapes. The adventure continues to the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where you’ll visit the famous Gombe Stream or Mahale Mountains National Parks, home to wild chimpanzees. This safari combines breathtaking wildlife encounters with unique opportunities for primate tracking, offering an unforgettable and off-the-beaten-path experience in Tanzania’s wild west.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kigoma

Arrival in Kigoma, a charming town located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest freshwater lake. Kigoma offers stunning views of the lake and is known for its vibrant local culture. Accommodation at Kigoma Hilltop, a comfortable lodge perched atop a hill with panoramic views of the lake and the town.

Day 2: Mahale National Park

After breakfast, transfer to Mahale Mountains National Park. Mahale is renowned for its population of wild chimpanzees and its stunning scenery, with dense forests, crystal-clear streams, and sandy beaches along Lake Tanganyika. Mahale Cottage Lodge is nestled in the heart of the park, offering cozy accommodations and easy access to the chimpanzee trekking areas.

Day 3: Mahale National Park

Full day in Mahale Mountains National Park. Embark on an unforgettable chimpanzee trekking experience, accompanied by experienced guides who will lead you through the forest in search of these incredible primates. In addition to chimpanzees, Mahale is home to a variety of other wildlife, including forest elephants, leopards, and numerous bird species.

Day 4: Katavi National Park

Departure for Katavi National Park, one of Tanzania's most remote and untouched wilderness areas. Katavi is known for its vast floodplains, dense woodlands, and large herds of buffalo and elephants. Mbali Mbali Katavi Tented Camp offers luxury tented accommodation in the heart of the park, providing an authentic safari experience amidst the African bush.

Day 5: Katavi National Park

Enjoy a full day of game drives in Katavi National Park. Encounter herds of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of antelope species as you explore the park's diverse ecosystems. Katavi is also home to predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Day 6: Katavi National Park

After breakfast, depart from Katavi and return to Kigoma. Spend the evening relaxing at Kigoma Hilltop, enjoying the stunning views of Lake Tanganyika and the surrounding landscapes. Reflect on your safari experiences as you unwind in this tranquil setting.

Day 7: Gombe National Park

Today, take a boat transfer to Gombe Stream National Park, famous for its pioneering research on wild chimpanzees conducted by Jane Goodall. Explore the park's lush forests and observe chimpanzee families in their natural habitat. Kigoma Hilltop provides comfortable accommodation for your overnight stay.

Day 8: Kigoma + drop-off for flight to Dar / Arusha / Zanzibar

After breakfast, depending on your onward travel plans, you will be dropped off at the airport for your flight to Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Zanzibar, marking the end of your safari adventure in western Tanzania.
