ITINERARY DETAILS

Day 1: Machame Gate (1490 m) To Machame Camp (2980 m)

Distance: 11 km / 7 miles

Trekking time: 5-7 hours

Zone: Rainforest

Pick up from your hotel in Moshi and drive to Machame gate for the climb.  Complete all registration processes and start climbing through the dense rain forest displaying beautiful views. Have lunch en route and proceed hiking  to reach Machame Camp in the evening. Dinner and sleep at the camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp (2980 m) To Shira Camp (3840 m)

Distance: 5 km / 3 miles

Trekking time: 4-6 hours

Zone: Heath

Set out for another day hike while exiting the rain forest and entering heath land moorland vegetation. Cross over a rocky ridge onto the Shira plateau (the highest plateau on Kilimanjaro) which leads to Shira Camp. Have rest upon arrival while waiting for dinner to be served.

Day 3: Shira Camp (3840 m) To Lava Tower (4630) To Barranco Camp (3970 m)

Distance: 10 km / 6.2 miles

Trekking time: 6-8 hours

Zone: Alpine desert

Trek through the moorland environment into the semi desert landscape. Hike towards Lava Tower (shark’s tooth) for acclimatization. This enables your body to adapt to high altitude and lower oxygen levels. Have lunch at the tower and proceed hiking to reach Barranco camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3900 m) to Karanga Camp (4000 m)

Distance: 5 km / 3 miles

Trekking time: 4-5 hours

Zone: Alpine desert

Spend another day acclimatizing to climb the Great Barranco Wall of 900 ft cliff. Take a walk across a series of hills and valleys into the Karanga Valley taking you to Karanga Camp. This is where you will set camp for an overnight stay.

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4000 m) To Barafu Camp (4673 m)

Distance: 4 km / 2 miles

Trekking time: 4-5 hours

Zone: Alpine desert

Trek out of Karanga valley following the path intersecting Mweka trail. The trail passes through the rocky section to finally arrive at Barafu Camp. Have an early dinner and retire to bed by 7:00 in preparing for the final summit.

Day 6: Ascend To The Summit

Distance: 18 km / 11.2 miles

Trekking time: 13- 15hours

Zone: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

Be awake by around 23:00 hours for a hot drink + snacks and putting on the necessary trekking gears. By torchlight, leave camp and start climbing through the volcanic scree to reach Stella Point (5685m) by sunrise. Spend some time resting and enjoying the view before making the final round trip to reach Uhuru peak (5895m). Take photographs at the summit while feeling accomplished standing at the highest point in Africa. Start descending down the mountain to finally reach Mweka hut in the evening.

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3100 m) To Mweka Gate (1980 m)

Distance: 10 km / 6 miles

Trekking time: 3-4 hours

Zone: Rainforest

This is the last day that hikers go for a short walk, towards Mweka gate. Upon arrival, climbers get awarded. For those who reached Stella point receive green certificates while those who reached Uhuru peak receive golden certificates. Go for a drive back to the hotel for rest and much celebrations or to the airport for departure.
