Route info: Marangu known as “Cocacola route” is the only trail with accommodation facilities like sleeping huts, dining halls and toilets
Packing list: hiking trousers, warm socks, winter jackets, long sleeve shirts, trekking socks, digital camera, binoculars, mosquito repellents, sunhat, toiletries, sunglasses with ultra violet radiation filtering etc.
ITINERARY DETAILS
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1800 m) To Mandara Hut (2720 m)
Distance: 8km / 5 miles
Trekking time: 4-6 hours
Vegetation zone: Rainforest
Pickup from the hotel in Moshi and drie to Marangu gate for entrance formalities. Initiate the climb, passing through coffee and maize plantations of the local people. The trail then takes you into the beautiful rainforest displaying fantastic views. Get to a stop at Mandara Hut for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2720 m) To Horombo Hut (3720 m)
Distance: 11.5km / 7 miles
Trekking time: 6-8 hours
Zone: Moorland Zone
Another beautiful day hiking into the moorland zone with display of the splendid view of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Climb steadily through the giant heather where you will finally reach Horombo Hut for hot dinner and much rest.
Day 3: Horombo Hut Acclimatization
This day is purely meant for acclimatization which prepares your body for high altitude and low oxygen levels. Take short but steady walk towards Mawenzi hut till mid afternoon. Afterwards, return to the camp for lunch and much rest.
Day 4: Horombo Hut (3720 m) to Kibo Hut (4720 m)
Distance: 10km / 6 miles
Trekking time: 5-7 hours
Zone: Low alpine zone / High alpine zone
A short challenging climb which leads you towards the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Proceed hiking to reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon. Spend the rest of the day drinking lots of water and have much rest in preparation for the summit ascend. Its recommended to sleep very early before 7:00 pm.
Day 5: Summit Ascend At Uhuru Peak (5895m)
Distance: 20 km / 12.5 miles
Trekking time: 13-15 hours
Zone: Glacial zone, high alpine zone and low alpine zone
Be awake by around 23:00 hours for a hot drink + snacks and putting on the necessary trekking gears. By torchlight, leave camp and start climbing through the volcanic scree to reach Gilman’s Point (5681m) by sunrise. Spend some time resting and enjoying the view before making the final round trip to reach Uhuru peak (5895m). Take photographs at the summit while feeling accomplished standing at the highest point in Africa. Start descending down the mountain to finally reach Horombo hut in the late afternoon. Dinner and sleep at the hut.
Day 6: Horombo Hut (3720 m) To Marangu Gate (1800 m)
Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Trekking time: 3-4 hours
Zone: Rainforest
The last day completing the final round down to Marangu gate passing through the beautiful lush green forest. Upon arrival, climbers get awarded. For those who reached Gilman’s point receive green certificates while those who reached Uhuru peak receive golden certificates. Drive back to the hotel for rest and much celebrations or to the airport for departure.
