Route info: Northern circuit is the newest and longest route with the highest success rate among others. Due much acclimatization time, its best for hikers who want to take it slow and enjoy adventure at the same time

ITINERARY DETAILS

Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2100 m) To Mti Mkubwa Camp (2820 m)

Distance: 6 km / 4 miles

Trekking time: 3-4 hours

Zone: Rainforest

Pick up from your hotel in Moshi and drive to Londorossi gate to initiate the climb. The hike takes you through the tropical rainforest allowing you to spot wildlife like buffalo and elephants along the way. Proceed with the steady climb to reach Mti Mkubwa camp in the afternoon. Have rest and prepare to set camp for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2820 m) To Shira 1 Camp (3505 m)

Distance: 8 km / 5 miles

Trekking time: 5-6 hours

Zone: Heath

Set out for another day hike while exiting the rain forest and entering heath land moorland vegetation. A short walk passes through Shira Ridge which leads down to Shira 1 Camp. Enjoy stunning view across the valley below and Western Breach of Kilimanjaro above.  Dinner and sleep at the camp.

Day 3: Shira Camp 1 (3500 m) To Shira Camp 2 (3840 m)

Distance: 7 km/4.3 miles

Trekking time: 3-4 hours

Zone: Heath

Climb out the moorland meadows for acclimatizing heading into the Shira plateau. The trail finally leads to Shira camp in the afternoon. An overnight stay at the camp.

Day 4: Shira Camp 2 (3840 m) To Lava Tower (4630m) To Moir Hut (4200 m)

Distance: 14 km/4 miles

Trekking time: 6-7 hours

Zone: Alpine desert

Climb into the semi desert landscape through the ‘Garden of the Senecios’ towards Lava Tower meant for acclimatization. This enables your body to adapt to high altitude and lower oxygen levels. Have lunch at the tower and proceed hiking downwards to reach Moir hut for an overnight stay.

Day 5: Moir Hut Camp (4200 m) To Buffalo Camp (4020 m)

Distance: 12 km/7 miles

Trekking time: 5-7 hours

Zone: Alpine desert

Climb out of Moir Valley while approaching summit of Lent Hills displaying great views of the plains lying north of Tanzania/Kenya border. The trail leads to Buffalo camp where you will spend the night.

Day 6: Buffalo Camp (4020 m) To Third Cave (3870 m)

Distance: 8 km/5 miles

Trekking time: 5-7 hours

Zone: Hearth

Hike upwards to Buffalo Ridge crossing over numerous ridges and gullies. Have lunch enroute and proceed hiking to reach Third Cave for a camping night.

Day 7: Third Cave (3870 m) To School Hut (4800 m)

Distance: 5 km/3 miles

Trekking time: 4-5 hours

Zone: Hearth

A short challenging climb which leads you towards the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Proceed hiking to reach School Hut where you will have rest upon arrival while waiting for early dinner to be served. Its recommended to sleep very early before 7:00 pm.

Day 8: Summit At Uhuru Peak (5895 m)

Distance: 18 km / 11.2 miles

Trekking time: 13- 15hours

Zone: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

Be awake by around 23:00 hours for a hot drink + snacks and putting on the necessary trekking gears. By torchlight, leave camp and start climbing through the volcanic scree to reach Stella Point (5685m) by sunrise. Spend some time resting and enjoying the view before making the final round trip to reach Uhuru peak (5895m). Take photographs at the summit while feeling accomplished standing at the highest point in Africa. Start descending down the mountain to finally reach Mweka hut in the evening.

Day 9: Retrace to Mweka Gate (1980 m)

Distance: 10 km / 6 miles

Trekking time: 3-4 hours

Zone: Rainforest

This is the last day that hikers go for a short walk, towards Mweka gate. Upon arrival, climbers get awarded. For those who reached Stella point receive green certificates while those who reached Uhuru peak receive golden certificates. Drive back to the hotel for rest and much celebrations or to the airport for departure.
